Odd Jobs and Carnival Update

Just an update:
The official December meeting is on Wednesday, December 14th. NOT right after school. We will be meeting together at 6:00 PM to go out and do odd jobs as a group. We would love for everyone to come.
We need just a few volunteers to help the officers run the booth at the carnival on Friday, December 16th from 4:30 to 8:00, or just as long as you can stay. Please contact either Mrs Blattman or any of the officers if you can help.
Also pertaining to the carnival: we need some volunteers to make and donate some yummy treats that we can have set out at our booth, even if you can't actually be there. If you want to make something, or even just donate cooking supplies to the officers to make them, please contact us ASAP. Thanks!

Hearts of Gold Activities

We've had a couple people asking about NHS meetings for December, so here we go:

Hearts of Gold activies that will count for NHS are as follows:

1. Odd jobs on Wednesday, the 14th. This will take the place of our regular meeting. Meet at 6:00 to go out with the group.
2. Cake auction on Thursday, the 15th. We need 2 cakes, one for each lunch. If you would like to make one, please let Ms. Blattman know as soon as possible.
3. Carnival on Friday, the 16th. This activity is from 5 to 8 pm. We need people to help with our booth.

It would be awesome if you all attended AT LEAST one of these Hearts of Gold activites, but feel free to participate in as many as you can.

Get out there and serve!

Awesome Service Opportunity

For anyone who is interested:
St Andrews Elementary School is asking for tutors who could come in once or twice a week to help students in reading and math. They would like you to commit to coming regularly so that the kids can bond with you and therefore make their learning experience more enjoyable. The program will begin in January and starts at 3:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  You will need your own transportation to the school, which is on 118th by the District.  If you are interested, come see Ms. Blattman so she can let the school know.

Christmastime is Coming. . .

Hey, all!
Last meeting was a huge success, thanks to all who attended. We ended up splitting off into three different service groups. Some of us went and cleaned all of the lovely spiderwebs off of the main office windows; some distributed the new recylcling bins to every classroom; and the rest of us made Christmas cards and ornaments for all of the teachers in the school.

Please remember to keep coming to all the meetings that you can. Every little bit helps!
There is not an official meeting for December. Instead, we encourage you all to participate in the Hearts of Gold activities throughout the month. On December 14th, the officers will be distributing the Christmas cards and ornaments that we made last week to the teachers. If a couple of people want to come and help us, they are welcome, but we do not need 40 people passing out cards.
Remember to be working on your total service hours for the year. You need a total of AT LEAST 8 hours, 4 with the group. This number is not a maximum, but a minimum. It is always good to do more than the lowest requirement.
So, until December 14th! Remember to smile big :D

November Meeting

The November meeting will take place after school on Wednesday, November 9th. We will ultimately be splitting off into three different service groups, but will all meet in RM 2516 at the beginning as usual. Please be On Time (as in definitely no later than 2:40) so that we can get started as soon as possible and you will know which group you will be serving with.
There is only one week left that the NHS will be accepting new members. If you have not turned in your money ($15) and both forms signed by the end of the quarter (November 3rd), you are out of luck and will have to wait until second semester starts. So get your stuff turned in and remind your friends.
Sophomores: Just a reminder that you have to be a student enrolled in HHS for a full semester before you can join NHS, so you can come at the beginning of third quarter, but not any sooner.
Here is the result of the Canned Food Drive that we had earlier this month. While every little bit definitely helps, we were slightly disappointed that we weren't able to collect any more. We hope that in future collection drives, we get more participation.

Remember to Smile!

Hey all, thanks so much for coming last meeting and working so hard. :D For those who were unable to attend, we ended up not collecting enough canned food to make it worth an entire meeting organizing and boxing them, so we did a service activity for the preschool instead. We made different matching game folders by coloring and cutting out printed activities and pasting them into manilla folders. The kids will love them!

Making the activity folders
As of now, the November meeting is scheduled for right after school on Wednesday, November 9th. The service activity is yet to be decided. Put it on your calendars and be sure to come on time and ready to serve!
If anyone still needs to turn in any of the forms or pay the $15 fee, you are late! Once first quarter ends, you are out of luck, so get those papers turned in!
Other than that, just be making sure you have a handle on your service hours! Don't put it off until fourth quarter, you will regret it. Remember that you need eight full hours of approved service, if you are unsure if a certain out-of-school activity will count toward your hours, just feel free to ask. There are often extra service opportunities around the school, so feel free to ask about those as well.
Have a great day and remember to smile! :D

October Meeting Update

ATTENTION:
The meeting for October is on October 12th after school in RM 2516. We are still doing a food drive for the Utah Food Bank, but we won't actually be going there, sorry for the confusion. We will collect food items in the commons each morning for two weeks, from Wednesday, September 28th to Wednesday, October 12th. Our meeting on the 12th will be boxing and sorting the food collected. Encourage everyone you know to participate by bringing in at least two cans. If all HHS students and staff bring in two cans each we will have 4000 food items! Think of how many people we can help feed this holiday season. :)
THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUSLY POSTED!

Welcome to NHS, 2011-2012!!!

Welcome to Herriman High's second school year ever! We hope you all had a magnificent summer, filled with tons and tons of service and spreading happiness, no doubt :-)

Today we had our very first meeting of the year. We had an awesome turnout, but are still welcoming more people if you happened to miss it! We cut out window covers out of black paper for every classroom to have in case of a lockdown, and made posters to advertise our canned food drive that is coming up.

Just a reminder of NHS common procedure:  You need to have your NHS club permission form signed by your parents and turned in to Ms Blattman in RM 2516, along with a receipt showing that you payed the $15 fee. If those two things are not turned in by the end of the quarter, you are out of luck and will not be able to join until next year (except sophomores, more about you guys in a second). Please get these in ASAP. They were supposed to be in TODAY at the first meeting.
At every meeting, there will be a sign-in sheet at the front of the room. You must write your name on this sheet if you want to get service hours for the activity that count toward your total. Today we had some people who forgot. We also had a few people who signed the sheet and then left without doing the project. This is not acceptable. You get credit for doing the service, not just showing up and staying for five minutes then calling it good. You know who you are.
Meeting are generally going to be the 2nd Wednesday of every month, unless otherwise noted, so plan accordingly.

SOPHOMORES: Students are not allowed to join NHS until they have been enrolled in Herriman High for a semester. So at the beginning of 3rd quarter (aka, 2nd semester) sophomores will be allowed to join. You will have to then get the permission form and pay the fee just like was stated above.

SERVICE HOURS: Juniors and Seniors in NHS for the entire year are required to perform 8 hours of service, 4 of which must be completed with the group. You will be receiving a hour sheet to record your service on at a later date. Again, sign the roll in order to get credit for group activities. Sophomores, since they will only be in NHS for half the year, are required to complete 4 hours of  servive, 2 of which must be completed with the group. Throughout the year there will be numerous opportunities to do outside service for the school that we will inform you of, the closest of which will be Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 4-5. If you are interested in helping out for an hour during the evenings on either one of those dates, go see Ms Blattman and sign up (RM 2516, upstairs). All of this can be found at any time in the sidebar.
Also: You must maintain a GPA of 3.7 or higher or you will be put on probation and even ejected from NHS. So keep those grades up! :-)

NEXT MEETING: For the next meeting, we will be going to the Utah Food Bank. Buses will not be provided, so plan on carpooling with other members of NHS or finding your own way there. Prior to the meeting, the NHS is doing a Canned Food Drive at the school, (which we made posters of advertising today during the activity). Starting on Wednesday, September 28th, we will be collecting non-perishable food in the Commons before school from 7:20-7:45 am and in Ms Blattman's room. Please spread the word and help by asking for food donations from your friends, family, and neighbors. The more we have the better. There is no such thing as too much :-)

If anyone missed the meeting on Wednesday (our last meeting of the year), make sure you get your service hours turned in ASAP.

You guys are awesome. :D We hope to see all of you juniors and sophomores back again next year, and hope that you all bring a friend. :D

The End is Coming

Thanks to all of you who participated in last week's activity. :D
Our next and final meeting of the year will be on Wednesday, May 11th. We will be electing officers for next year. At last week's activity, you were supposed to put a star by your name when you signed the role to indicated if you are interested in being an officer. If you didn't for some reason, or were gone that day, you should go talk to Ms Blattman so that your name can be put on the voting ballot. This meeting will also be combined with a small service activity for anyone who needs that extra hour of group service for their total record for the year.
Speaking of records . . . Make sure yours is filled out! You should have all of your service hours done BEFORE this next meeting (unless you are counting it as one). Remember that seniors and juniors need 8 hours total, with at least 4 with the group. Sophomores need at least 4 hours, 2 being with the group.
SENIORS: If you want to be awesome and have an NHS collar to wear at graduation in June, you have to bring a $20 check to this last meeting. If you want to return the collar to the school after graduation, you will get your money back. Otherwise, you can just keep the collar forever. :D
Thanks again to all of you who have stuck with us all year, and we hope that all of the juniors and sophomores will come back next year. :D

Hygiene Kits, among other things . . .

Hey, all you National Honors Society peoples!
Our next meeting will be after school on Wednesday, April 13th. We will be working on assembling hygiene kits for disaster victims in Japan, as well as other places in need around the globe. To make this happen, we will need lots of donations. Here are the things that are required to be in each individual kit:
  • 2 unbreakeable combs (no sharp handles)
  • 4 still-packaged toothbrushes
  • 1 tube of toothpaste (6-8 oz., no pumps)
  • 2 bars of soap (4-5 oz)
  • 2 hand towels (new towels, approximately 15" by 25". Please do not bring dish towels or washcloths. To sew a towel, serge or zigzag the edges of terry cloth to make a 15" by 25" towel.)

Please bring in as many of these items as you can, and encourage all of your friends, family, and neighbors to help. Just bring them in (preferably before the meeting) to Ms Blattman's room. Thanks!

Need extra service hours?!?!?! During both lunches every day for the next couple weeks, the NHS has been given permission to collect money donations from students for the earthquake hygiene kits. Anyone in NHS can go to Ms Blattman at the beginning of lunch and get one of the large collection bottles, walk around during lunch collecting money, and return it to her at the end of lunch. You will get half an hour of service time each lunch you help.

The meeting in May will be on Wednesday, May 11th. In addition to a small activity (yet to be decided), we will be electing officers for next year. SENIORS: if you want to have an NHS collar to wear at graduation in June, you have to bring $20 to this meeting. If you want to return it to the school after graduation, you will get your money back. Otherwise, you get to keep the collar forever. :D

Seniors again: Make sure you are getting all of your service hours done. Of the three grade levels in NHS, you are failing in attendance to the monthly meetings.

Reminder for EVERYONE: you all need to sign the roll at each meeting, or you won't get credit counting toward your service hours with the group, which you need four of (except sophmores, you guys only need two.)

Thanks for being so awesome, you guys! Have a wonderful day! :D

Induction Ceremony!

Just a STRONG reminder: This Wednesday, March 9th, 2011, is Herriman High's first EVER National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. This is NOT only for the sophmores. Even if you were inducted into NHS at Riverton or Bingham, you are still being inducted into the Herriman High Chapter of the society. So, that means everyone should come.
It starts at 6:30 pm in the Tech Atrium and will go until at the latest 7:30. You all should invite your parents to come with you. Nice dress is encouraged (as in no ratty jeans and/or T-shirts please) and there will be light refreshments served after the ceremony.
It will be great fun and we hope everyone can make it.

Be there or be melted into Rainbow Puddin'.

Thanks Everyone!

Thank You, everyone who was at the Food Bank service activity today. It was super fun!!! For those of you too lame to show up (you know who you are . . .), the rest of us drove down to the Utah Food bank right after school and helped pack care-boxes to send out to shelters. They had rice snacks, spaghetti noodles, canned foods, and tons of other stuff. We formed a conveyor belt style line and just stormed our way through, filling up at least three 3x4x2 panels of boxes. Good Job, you guys!
Next month's activity is our long-anticipated Induction Ceremony!!! Huzzah! You all should be receiving an invitation in the mail (unless you never gave us your address or never turned in your club permission form, which is mega-important by-the-way; you won't recieve any recognition or get any awards or credit for being in NHS if we don't have that piece of paper!!!). It is in the evening on Wednesday, March 9th, at 6:30 in the Tech Atrium. It is a ceremony, so please dress nicely (as in no jeans or T-shirts) and your parents are encouraged to come. There will be light refreshments afterward.
If you have any suggestions for future service activities, either for later this year or for next year, please post them in a comment or just talk to one of the officers. We are trying to come up with new and fun service projects and would appreciate your input! :D

Semester Two!!! Hooray!!!

Hello, All!
So, our last activity went great, and many thanks to all of you who came. For those of you who were unable to attend, we ended up doing odd jobs for the preschool, coloring pictures, cutting stuff out, etc.
SOPHMORES!!!! Your time is finally here!!! All sophmores who want to join NHS need to go to Ms Blattman's room, upstairs in Rm 2516 and get the Club permission form. Get it signed, pay the $15 fee to the main office, and take the receipt and the form back upstairs and turn them in pronto! The qualifications for this organization can be seen in the right side bar of this page; the only exception is that those joining at the 2nd semester only have to complete 4 service hours for the year, rather than 8 like the rest of the members from the beginning of the year. Meetings are on the 2nd Wednesday of every month in Ms Blattman's room unless otherwise stated. We hope to see you all there!
The next activity is going to be on Tuesday, February 15th; This is a different date than previously posted. We are going to be volunteering at the Food Bank. Very Important: Buses will not be provided. If you are going to be carpooling with other students, you need to pick up and fill out a Travel Form and turn it in BEFORE the meeting; otherwise, you will need to drive yourself. This is going to be super fun, and we hope all of you will make an effort to be there. It really is a great experience.
Another Heads-Up: Our official Induction Ceremony will be in the evening on March 9th. It's really important that everyone is there, so plan accordingly.
